MN DNR Wants Boaters To 'Pull The Plug' On Invasive Species
MN DNR News Release - May 18, 2009
Beginning Memorial Day Weekend, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officers will join forces with other law enforcement agencies to prevent the transportation of aquatic invasive species from the Brainerd, Lake Mille Lacs and Prior Lake areas.
The DNR wants boaters to “Pull the Plug” on aquatic hitchhikers such as zebra mussels.
The increasing zebra mussel populations at Lake Mille Lacs and Rice Lake near Brainerd, and the new zebra mussel infestation at Prior Lake in Scott County are a particular concern.
Minnesota’s water resources are threatened by numerous aquatic invasive species such as the zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil and purple loosestrife. These species could be easily spread within the state if citizens, businesses and visitors don’t take the necessary steps to contain them.
“Invasive species can be easily transported from one lake to another, so by taking some simple precautions citizens can minimize the risk,” said Capt. John Hunt, DNR water resource enforcement manager.
Hunt offered boaters these suggestions:
Draining bait buckets, bilges and live wells before leaving any water access is a good habit to develop.
Removing aquatic plants from boats and trailers to prevent the spread of invasive species is required by law.
Draining all water, including pulling the drain plug, as required by law when leaving waters that have been designated as infested with spiny water flea or zebra mussels.
The coordinated enforcement effort will include an increased presence at public water accesses where officers will look closely for violators who could face fines of up to $500. Officers will also give out informational cards on transporting infested waters to all boaters.
Billboards and newspaper ads are being used in the Mille Lacs and Brainerd areas to encourage boaters to “Pull the Plug” on aquatic hitchhikers.
DNR watercraft inspectors and creel census clerks will also be checking boats and informing boaters to inspect, remove and drain before leaving water accesses. Informational materials have also been provided to Mille Lacs area businesses.
Tribal authorities, Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, Minnesota State Patrol and local sheriffs’ departments will assist conservation officers in this effort.

KID FUN To Host Open House At MN State Park
Echo Press - Published: 05/15/2009
Come celebrate Minnesota State Park’s Open House Day Sunday, June 7 at Lake Carlos State Park. Volunteers from Kreative Ideas Designed For Understanding Nature (KID FUN) have planned a day full of fun for the entire family. The second annual family fun day will begin with a non-denominational church service at 10 a.m. followed by a free-will offering picnic lunch.
During the afternoon, families can enjoy face painting, pontoon rides, youth fishing, canoe lessons, interpretive hikes, a variety of naturalist events and much more. The KID FUN volunteers are working together to create a nature-inspired outdoor play area at Lake Carlos State Park. The goal is to design and create a playground that will blend fun physical activity into the natural setting of the park. The area will also encourage and engage youth in a greater understanding of the environment.
Lake Carlos State Park is located 10 miles north of Alexandria on State Highway 29, then 2 miles west on Highway 38. For park information, contact the park office at (320) 852-7200.

Boaters Reminded To Help Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers
MN DNR News Release - May 5, 2009
With the onset of the 2009 boating and fishing season, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking boaters and anglers to keep up their good work in minimizing the spread of aquatic invasive species.
By taking a few simple steps when leaving a lake or river, boaters and anglers can do their part to help stop the spread in Minnesota waters of several aquatic hitchhikers, such as Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussels.
The key steps are to clean, drain, and dry boats and equipment:
Clean all aquatic plants, zebra mussels, and other aquatic animals from boats and trailers before leaving the water access.
Drain water from bilges, live wells, and bait containers before leaving the water access.
Dry boats and equipment for five days, or spray with high pressure and hot water before transporting to another lake or river.
Boaters leaving lakes and rivers that the DNR has listed as infested waters need to be especially careful. Anglers who have live bait and want to keep it for another time should drain any infested water from the bait container and replace it with tap or spring water. Signs are posted at public access points to identify infested waters.
Boaters should also remember to dispose of unwanted live bait including worms and minnows in the trash rather than dump them in the lakes and woods.
“Actions to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species should now be part of the routine for boaters,” according to Jay Rendall, DNR invasive species prevention coordinator. “These simple steps help boaters comply with state laws that prohibit the transport of aquatic plants, zebra mussels and water from infested waters.”
“The recent discovery of zebra mussels in Prior Lake and the expanding population in Lake Mille Lacs are new potential sources of spread,” said Luke Skinner, DNR invasive species unit supervisor. “The potential to spread aquatic invasive species increases each year. We need Minnesotans to continue with their high level of action.”
Last year, DNR biologists found 12 additional waters infested with Eurasian watermilfoil, bringing the total number of infested water bodies in the state to 215.
Inland waters known to be infested with zebra mussels include Lake Ossawinnamakee and Rice Lake near Brainerd; Lake Mille Lacs; Prior Lake; Charlie, Pleasant, Sucker, Vadnais in Ramsey County; and Lake Zumbro north of Rochester. The Mississippi River from its confluence with the Pine River down to the Iowa border is also on the infested waters list.
Spiny waterfleas are in most of the waters along the Canadian border, from Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River east to Lake Superior.
The DNR continues to conduct the “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers!” campaign statewide to remind boaters and anglers to take precautions. People will likely see the icon and messages in a variety of places this year, including billboards, newspapers and on outdoor banners. Signs at public accesses, reminders from DNR watercraft inspectors, radio and television ads, and public service announcements will also be used to reach boaters this summer.
